I currently use Kaspersky Internet Security, i just keep downloading the trial for 3 months, anyone got any FREE suggestions, would i have to use multiple programs to get maximum protection from threats, many people say to use Avast or AVG what are they like? Thanks
Answer (by buster):
Get Kaspersky Internet security 2009 for free for ever. No Joke.
Open a free current account with Barclays bank, the follow the links via barclays web site to get a free years license for Kaspersky, (3 computer license), next year Barclay's and Kaspersky will offer another free license and so on.
The free programs are a joke once your used to a quality product like kaspersky.
Any how other free progrs like . Avast / Avira or AVG just offer anti-virus only and have restrictions that are unlocked once you upgrade to the paid edition
Avira and Avast are better than AVG.
.
I have Kaspersky for free via Barclays, just a balance of £5 left in the account.. Bargain
Also HSBC bank give their customers McAfee security suite (if they ask), but Kaspersky is better.
Marry Xmas, always good to get something for free from your bank, a refreshing change, look it up on banks web sites, takes about a week to get the license code via e-mail.

Free security software for windows 2003 server ? |
I am setting up a test machine using windows 2003 server web edition and am battling to find a security package like ESET NOD32's security package (which i use on my home machine) for this server? Can anyone suggest some free software or eval software i can try. I went to the comodo website but the apparently no longer support windows 2003.

Answer (by Soccer Dave):
FREE SECURITY GUIDE FOR XP AND VISTA:
There are two main things that you need to protect your PC, real-time antivirus software and a two way firewall (inbound and outbound) you can get them both completely free, these two work well together on XP and Vista (32 and 64 bit):
Avast Anti-Virus 4.8 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Comodo Pro (firewall)
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Comodo Pro comes top in independent leaktests
http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php
Tip: Browse the net using a limited account rather then an administrative account, a limited account does not have the power to make system changes or install software therefore preventing a lot of malicious software from being installed in the first place.
http://windows.about.com/od/security/a/why_limited.htm
Would also recommend that you use a safer browser like Mozilla Firefox 3, and download additional anti-spyware software my favourite is Superantispyware.
Superantispyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
Firefox 3:
http://www.mozilla.com
You should Install the McAfee SiteAdvisor add-on - when you search for something using Yahoo, Google or MSN, site advisor displays either a green tick (safe site), yellow exclamation mark (use with care) or a red cross (dangerous site) next to every result. http://www.siteadvisor.com/

I use AVG free internet security. Is this suitable to use alone or should I be using any other security ware alongside AVG such as to deal with rootkits. Does anyone know of any other free software I could use to give extra protection. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Tip: Install Avast then Comodo because Comodo can sometimes interfere with Avast's installation, I would recommend changing Avast's default skin for the Vista style skin available from their website - http://www.avast.com/eng/skins.html

You should only browse the internet using a limited account not an administrative account, if a virus infects your computer and you are using an admin account it can make critical system changes, but a limited account does not have the power to make critical changes so the amount of damage a virus can do is limited.

I registered myself for the upgrade on 7th April 2008 - and was advised it was going to arrive "in two weeks". Two weeks later it was "one month". A month later it was "we have run out of stock and we are expecting a new shipment soon" without specifying a date After that, repeated phonecalls for call backs, emails etc. have gone unanswered. I bought my laptop from laptopsdirect in early April.

Go to Trading Standards...common trick companies use to avoid giving you what you are entitled to.
Samsung tried the same thing with me with regard to a digital camera - went to Trading Standards - they rang Samsung - lo and behold my bits turned up a day or two later

is there any good internet security software i can download for free? |
my norton internet security ran out today and i dont fancy paying about 50 quid for another years subscription, is there any i can download for free and is just as secure as norton?
Answer (by jibbarjabar):
These days you need a whole lot more than just a virus protection. Only about 15% of all malware is viruses. The rest is worms, trojans, phishing schemes, spyware, etc.
Here's some ideas to "roll ya own" Internet Security Suite for free. Free is always the best.
---------------------------------------
1. For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V...You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict...you MUST uninstall any old anti-virus products)
For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVirĀ® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!
Download here:
http://www.free-av.com/
Avoid an anti-virus called AVG (free version). It is wildly popular but has poor virus detection rates.
----------------------------------
2. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............(use at least 1 anti-spyware, but 2 is OK):
SUPERAntiSpyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
-----------------------------------------
3. For your Firewall..........(Always use only 1 software firewall)
A decent free firewall is PC Tools Firewall Plus. One can either choose "Normal User Mode" Or "Expert User Mode"'depending on the detail of alerts and application custom rules desired.
It is one of the few free firewalls that will work (and work well) on Vista as well as XP and 2000.
http://www.pctools.com/firewall/
4. And to help protect your computer from ever getting infected with malware in the first place............ (use them both)
SpywareBlaster helps to immunize your computer again certain selected malware.:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SiteAdvisor warns you when visiting a potentionally malicious web-site:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/
-----------------------------------
5. And always keep your Windows and all your installed software 100% updated and patched with all critical and security updates from the vendors THIS IS A MUST! In Internet Explorer just click Tools then Windows Updates.
Here is a little online (no download) security tool called The Secunia Software Inspector, that checks a computer for un-secure, un-updated and un-patched apps that may be installed on your computer.
The Secunia Software Inspector checks for possibly vulnerable programs like Adobe, Winamp, Java, Windows, Internet Explorer etc. and notifies if critical security updates are needed. !
Will work using IE, Opera or Firefox.
Use it once a month.
Pretty cool and free at:

![]() | What is the best FREE virus/internet security software available for download on the web? |
I'm looking for the best internet security software which is available for free and can be downloaded from the internet
Answer (by Spartacus!):
This question comes up a lot here, and I'm surprised Yahoo doesn't have it in their FAQ. However, I keep my answer handy. These are tools I can recommend as reliable, having tested all of them within the last two months.
firewall:
Comodo (http://www.comodo.com), or
PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall), though Comodo will be a bit easier to use.
antivirus:
Avira (http://www.free-av.com)
AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com)
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)
all provide realtime protection and automatic updates.
antispyware:
Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com) or
Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com)
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_a... and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl...
for additional removal ability.
Finally, a generic intrusion protection tool is a good supplement to the tools in the first three categories. The best one I've tested is System Safety Monitor Free edition (http://www.syssafety.com) which does a better job than most of the commercial intrusion prevention applications from major vendors.
